FiberSwitch® – rapid Multiplexer for LargeCore fibers

New switching principle to avoid spectral ripples

Leoni Fiber Optics developed a new fiber optical multiplexer for multimode-step index LargeCore fibers between 400µm and 1.000µm and up to 8 channels. This multiplexer is capable of switching through all channels in shortest time and to thereby cover several measuring points almost simultaneously.

Therefore Leoni developed a new switching principle at its competence center for optical switches in Jena (Germany) to enable a precise control of the LargeCore fibers. A spherical mirror in the LargeCore multiplexer is triggered and shifted by piezo-elements to couple the incoming signal in the according outgoing channel with a switching time of ≤ 50ms and a switching frequency of ≤ 20 Hz.

The biggest advantage in action is the interference-free operation mode of the multiplexer, meaning it causes no spectral ripples. This is particularly significant in fields of optical metrology and for spectroscopic applications. A spectral ripple is an undesirable distorting interference, which can be created within the device and lead to certain waviness. These waves tend to interfere, extinguish or to distort mutually and are thus unwanted to occur in measuring projects with highest accuracy.

The LargeCore multiplexer is available with many connector types i.e. F-SMA, ST, FC and many more and in compact table top or 19” housings, as well as in customer specific housing types.

Ordering option Front Control Panel and SwitchBox

Another new order option for our FiberSwitch® product line in table top housings is the manual Front Control Panel by which the actual channel number is displayed and can be altered without another external device. The Front Control Panel can easily be integrated into the switches’ housings, assuming there is enough space.

For our optical switches in compact housings we can offer a similar but slightly different device, the SwitchBox. Connected to the switch via a bus interface it offers actually the same functions as the Front Control Panel, meaning to display the actual channel and to alter it when needed.
